A Drinker with a Running Problem…..

We have all been there, whether it is coming out from under the bridge at the Sandblazer or turning the corner and heading back north to finish the Tulsa Run.  The familiar sight of the beer truck comes into view.  At first, one would think that drinking beer and running are counter intuitive.  I am here to tell you that you are right, it is.

A twelve ounce serving of light beer has less than 5 carbohydrates and the alcohol itself is not the best choice to re-hydrate an athlete, so don’t let someone tell you it is better or just like your favorite sports drink.  A high glycemic, caffeine and alcohol free drink is a much better choice to replace lost electrolytes and to help heal taxed muscles.

However, you just ran at least 3 miles for no good reason!!   No one was chasing you.  You were not late for the prom.  Enjoy!!!

As runners, we have come to expect beer after the race or training run.  We know our bodies and how beer fits into our training regimen.  Non runners don’t understand, just like they don’t understand why someone would elect to run in the first place.  Need I say more?

I will be checking in from time to time to sound of about training, rehab, and the occasional beer or four.  And remember, training makes enjoying the good things in life even better.
